About King

  • Our mission for Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School is to build a 21st century learning community where all members are encouraged to do their personal best in a safe environment where we nurture respectful, responsible and caring citizens of the world.

    M. L. King School is a part of the Ann Arbor Public Schools and houses approximately 500 children from Young Five's through fifth grade. The King student body is extraordinarily diverse with families from 20+ countries and 35+ languages, which strengthens our learning and social experiences. In addition, King offers academic excellence that few other schools can match. King kids love to go to school. The love of learning instilled at King forms a solid foundation for future academic success.

Teachers have high expectations of each and every student. Teachers demand that students do their personal best. This is encompassed in using Responsive Classroom. Our staff has a unique blend of diversity, experience, vision, and spirit which serves to uphold the principles to which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. subscribed. All professional staff at King are certified by the State of Michigan and are teaching in their certificated areas.

The King PTO works cooperatively with staff to accomplish our mission. Parents take an active role in the lives of their children and in the support and organization of the school. As a community, we are proud that parent involvement is highly valued and recognized as a strength.

For the convenience of our working parents and the demand of a highly professional community, King houses a before-and after-school program called KingCare, which is operated by a non-profit organization and supported by the District’s Community Recreation and Education Department.
